Neck lift/Chin augmentation
Cosmetic surgical procedures
Benefits
-
Reduces excess skin, fat, and muscle bands
- Improves chin projection and shape
- Enhances the angle between the horizontal and vertical parts or the neck
Techniques
-
The most common technique involves returning the skin to its youthful upward and backward position in the neck and cheeks. The excess skin is then removed, with scars resulting around the ears and usually extending into the scalp behind the ears.
- A simple technique that is suitable for the very elderly or those who have premature coarseness of their neck skin, is to remove the excess skin and fat without repositioning. This leaves a vertical scar down the center of the neck.
- Patients with excess fat only and good skin tone (a double chin) may be treated with liposuction alone. Scars are very hard to detect.
- Banding of the neck muscle may be repaired by removing the bands or repositioning them.
- Chin augmentation is achieved either with a repositioning of the bone, an implant made of bone-like Teflon, or injections with a volumizer like Radiesse. The first two options are permanent, while the Radiesse lasts about one year.
Limitations
-
Neck lifting may result in unsightly scars, bleeding, ear distortion, muscle paralysis, asymmetry or infection.
- Liposuction may leave too much excess skin, or may cause minor ridges, grooves or lumpiness or the fat
- Chin implants or chin repositioning may leave the edges detectable visibly or by touch.
